Just before entering Jerusalem for the last time,
Jesus was anointed with spikenard as a way of
preparing Him for what He was about to endure
(John 12:3).
When Jesus was crucified on the cross, witnesses
offered Him wine mixed with myrrh as an
act of
mercy to help alleviate His suffering.(Mark 15:53).
And, after Jesus had died, His body was taken
and prepared for burial with a mixture of myrrh
and aloes, also known as sandalwood (John 19:39).
Of course, the place of essential oils in the Easter
story pales in comparison to the main message
of the season – that Christ died and rose again so
we would experience forgiveness and new life...
But it does make me stand in awe that God has
not only provided for our salvation, but also for
our comfort and well-being in this life.
Have a joyful Easter weekend!
