What makes Good Friday good?

When we understand what Christ did for us on the cross, the desire to do good with our lives naturally follows.

A big part of this is gratitude — because Christ died for our sins, we want to show Him thanks by living a life that pleases Him.

But it goes deeper than that.

Creating a desire to do good is actually one of the main reasons Jesus suffered the crucifixion on our behalf.

Check out this verse:

“… who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds” (Titus 2:14).

See what it says there?

Christ gave His life for us to do more than provide a sacrifice for sin.

He also died to change the kind of people we are.

So we would…

No longer live in lawlessness…

No longer live as though our lives are our own…

But as those who belong to Him… as His possession…

And zealous for good deeds.

So…

Good Friday is good because on it we recall the great love God has shown us through Jesus’s death on the cross.

But it’s fair to say it’s also good in another way…

It’s good in that through His death Jesus restored us to God’s design… so we would live as a people who are eager to do good.
