Why do we tend to think the worst?

One day when my dad was a senior in high school he got called out of class to the principal’s office.

My dad had never been called down to the principal’s office before… but he knew from some of his classmates that this was never a good thing.

So on the way to the office his mind raced to discover what kind of trouble he may have gotten into… all while fear was rising in his chest.

When he got to the office, two men were waiting for him.

One was the principal.

The other was Coach Vince Lombardi.

Yes… thee Vince Lombardi.

At the time, Lombardi was not yet the famous coach of the Green Bay Packers.

He was coach at the U.S. Military Academy… and he was at my dad’s high school to recruit him to play quarterback for the Army football team at West Point.

May dad actually ended up going to another school.

But this remains one of those neat stories that our family remembers.

And I pass it on to you today not to show how cool may dad was for being recruited by — and saying no to — Vince Lombardi.

I share it as a reminder that what we initially think means bad news isn’t necessarily the case.

Yes, because of our sense of guilt, we tend to think the worst when certain circumstances arise.

We may even think we’re doomed.

But we must remember… if we are in Christ, we are already accepted through His love (Eph.1:5-6).

There is no condemnation in Him (Rom.8:1).

And all that happens to us is simply Him writing the story of our lives… both for our good and His glory.
