Mike Rowe, the former host of
the show 'Dirty Jobs,' makes a great point.
In a recent TV interview, Rowe noted that Americans are dissatisfied with their lives because they don't value work.
According to Rowe, the basic message of our culture is the less work the better... so the earlier you retire or the shorter your work week the happier
you'll be.
In short, work is regularly portrayed as the 'enemy of happiness.'
But as Rowe states further, this ignores the fact that there is an underlying, inherent value to work.
And it also ignores that the happiest people in the world tend to be those who are dedicated to their work... no matter what that work may be.
Amen.
Amen to all of that!
God designed us to work from the beginning.
Work is not a curse, but part of God's
design.
The Bible makes this clear when God tells Adam -- before the Fall -- to cultivate and keep the garden (Genesis 2:15).
And since work is part of our Creator's plan for us, it only makes sense we'd be dissatisfied with our lives if we're always looking to cut corners and escape the work He intends for us. It also explains why the Bible says, "The sleep of the laborer is sweet" (Ecclesiastes
5:12).
