More than forgiveness...

Two hundred and fifty-five years ago a pastor in England got caught in a thunderstorm while traveling by foot.

For protection, he hid himself in a cleft in a nearby rocky gorge.

Standing in that cleft inspired Augustus Toplady to write the old hymn “Rock of Ages”… which is about Christ being our refuge from sin.

One of the lines in the song speaks of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross being a ‘double cure’ for us.

What’s that about?

Well… most recall quickly that it’s by Christ’s death the guilt of our sin is removed.

Praise God for that!

But there’ more…

Christ’s death also breaks sin’s grip on us… or as the Bible puts it, it’s ‘reign’ over us.

… Now that’s part of the good news of the gospel that’s often overlooked, and needs to be remembered.

Because it means…

In Christ, you have the ‘double cure’ you need.

Not only are you forgiven, but you’re able to say no to sin and yes to the life God is calling you to live.
