Why I avoid gender-neutral language...

Published: Wed, 02/07/18

Yesterday I saw one of the silliest news clips I’ve seen in a while.

The prime minister of Canada was at some kind of public forum and a woman there asked him a question.

In her question she made the ‘mistake’ of using the word ‘mankind.’

I felt sorry for the woman…

Because instead of answering her thoughtful remark, the prime minister saw fit to scold her for not saying ‘peoplekind’ instead of ‘mankind.’

The incident reminded me of the time when a fellow passenger on an airplane gave me an icy glare because I referred to the woman serving us as a ‘stewardess’ instead of a ‘flight attendant.’

The prime minister’s response also reminded me why I try and avoid gender-neutral language as much as possible.

You see… gender-neutral language — at least as it’s being pushed today — has very little to do with equality or being inclusive.

It has more to do with rejecting God’s design for those He has made in His image.

And that’s not a good thing.

From the very beginning God’s been making us ‘male and female’ (Gen.1:27).

And He’s still making us that way today… with unique and complementary features, for the purpose of serving Him and glorifying Him together.

No amount of politically correct posturing will change God’s order of creation.

And to reject it is a good way to have things end up going badly.

So instead of trying to obliterate the differences between men and women, we ought to embrace them as part of His glorious design to bless the world.
