Every time a big news story breaks, you have
a decision to make.
You must decide:
How much about this do I really need to know?
Our temptation -- depending on the story, of course -- is to want to know as much as possible.
But is this really a worthwhile pursuit?
With
the volume of news today, finding out all there is to know about a story can easily consume every waking hour.
And the pursuit of such knowledge takes away from time you could spend on your calling.
So... here's my take on how to handle big news stories (which tend to happen all too frequently)...
When a big story breaks, determine
quickly how much about it you need to know.
If you need to know more than just that the event simply happened -- because it relates to your calling or ability to secure your family -- then get what you need to know and quit.
But most of the time, exposing ourselves to commentary after commentary and update after update is useless... and just a waste of time.
All it does is satisfy our desire for what singer Don Henley called, "dirty laundry."
So when it comes to big news, consume with care.
Don't let it take away from your mission in life.
This doesn't mean you're indifferent to what's going on in the world.
It just means you'd rather devote yourself in an area where you've been called and can make a difference.
