Do you know what Bible verse unbelievers quote
more than any other?
Matthew 7:1.
Which says:
"Do not judge."
Unbelievers regularly use this verse -- out of context, of course -- to silence believers when it comes to voicing their views about biblical standards of morality... and other areas of
concern.
But no matter how often the "do not judge" mantra is raised, you shouldn't be intimidated.
In fact, when properly understood, judging plays an important role in faithfully bringing Christ's dominion to the world.
This doesn't mean we're to become "judgmental."
Nor does
it mean we're to carry ourselves with a spirit of condemnation.
No... not at all!
But it does mean we're to be making moral evaluations... between good and evil, right and wrong, true and false... and we're to speak and act accordingly.
Jesus said as much a few lines after the "do not judge" verse when He said, "Do not throw your
pearls before swine" (Mt.7:6).
In order to obey what Jesus says here, you have to judge...
You have to determine who would be regarded as swine.
This may seem foreign -- even harsh -- to us today... because we've lost the sense that God created an ethical universe... where He blesses obedience and curses
disobedience.
But... even though making ethical evaluations may seem out of place in our current scene, it's essential if we're going to bring the light of God's kingdom to the world.
... And doing so can be a very gracious act.
So go ahead and make constructive moral judgments wherever God has called you to bring His rule and
blessing.
Just seek to judge rightly (Jn.7:24).
