The Puritans actually got quite a few things right.
But let's talk about just one of them:
Their vision.
When the Puritans came to America their purpose was to establish "a city on a hill."
In other words... they came to create a society that would
be a shining of example of what it means for a people to live according to God's Word.
And... this vision became the foundation of the most free and prosperous nation the world has ever seen.
Today, Christians rarely envision America as a city on a hill.
Yes... we envision having Christ-centered homes... and maybe being a light at
the workplace...
... but few are those who can even imagine our educational, business, and government institutions being used to advance the kingdom of God.
And this brings us back to the Puritans...
... because whatever fault we may find with these saints of old, they had the vision thing right...
... they saw Christ's Lordship as something to be worked out through the totality of life.
And that's something surely we could use.
As America flounders, it's a good time to renew that Puritan vision.
We need a bigger picture of how Christ's kingdom can completely transform our
world.
