In the classic book "A Pilgrim's Progress" there's a character known as 'the man with the muckrake.'
He's described as:
"A man who could look no way but downward with the muckrake in his hands;
who would neither look up nor regard the crown he was offered."
The man with the muckrake is a great, timely metaphor.
It applies to anyone who becomes so consumed with the muck of this world he loses sight of the hope of God's kingdom, and his place in it.
So take heed...
With all the corruption, lies and perversions of our day, it's easy to get absorbed in the muck... fretting over evildoers and worrying about the future.
Now of course...
There are some -- particularly brave, muckraking journalists -- who are called to spend their days in filth in order to expose evil. And I thank God for them.
They're doing necessary, biblical work (Eph.5:11). And we need more with their courage.
Yet for all who aren't called to be muckrakers, take care...
Yes, be aware of the vile shenanigans around you so you can stand against them where you have opportunity.
But don't let news of them suck you in like quicksand and take you away from the good calling God has for you.
