When a new president or other public official takes the oath of their office, it's customary to do so with a hand on the Bible.
In this way office-holders affirm they'll be faithful to their duties to the best of their abilities.
Yet there's something else going on when an office-holder places his hand on the Bible...
Whether he realizes it or not... the person taking the oath is also acknowledging the authority of God and His Word over him.
And because this is so, the people are in a place to hold elected officials to the standards of God's Word.
Of course, to do so people must recognize the Bible doesn't just apply to private life, but public life as well.
This may be a big step for many.
But God's Word does apply to all of life...
... and recognizing this is the only way to bring God's light to our path in the days ahead.
