Another email in my series of good coming from coronavirus.
Have you been following the story about Pastor John MacArthur from California?
He's been in the news a lot lately for holding church services in defiance of a State government order not to meet due to concerns over the coronavirus.
I see a lot of good coming from Pastor MacArthur's bold stand.
One of the biggest being that it's forcing us to consider the extent of the State's authority.
Most tend to assume the State's power is absolute.
A friend of mine put it this way when he said if the State told us to wear propeller hats for a day, many would comply.
But the State's authority is not absolute.
In fact, God has given the State very limited authority in that He calls it a 'minister of justice' (Rom.13).
And outside of that realm, there are other authorities that come into play... such as the church and the family.
The truth that the State has an extremely limited role is something we should have learned in high school civics class.
Unfortunately, there are many that never learned that lesson. But COVID-19 is giving us a chance to think carefully about the place of the State in our lives today.
And I see this as a very good thing... not just concerning COVID, but other issues we may face in the future.
