Have your ever noticed if you give something too much attention, God sometimes seems to take it away for our own good?
I wonder if that's what He's doing with sports right now?
There's a lot of good that can come from sports.
Sports can develop character, promote unity, inspire... and just serve as a wholesome diversion in a stress-filled world.
(As a matter of disclosure, I enjoy following a little college football, da Bears, and the Rays.)
But in recent years the importance given to sports has been over the top... as seen in the 24/7 sports cycle, the pressure on young competitors to perform, and the treatment of celebrity athletes as though they are some kind of thought leaders.
It's all become a little much!
But with COVID-19 and the resulting shutdowns, we have a chance to reset our priorities when it comes to sports.
So my hope is that just as there are periodic corrections in financial markets, so will there be a correction in sports...
... and when sports resume, they will have a more modest place in our lives (with lower ticket prices and NO politics too!)
And here's a good sign this needed correction in sports has taken place...
When youth leagues start scheduling practices and games again for Sunday mornings, parents everywhere will rise up and say, "Sorry, we'll be worshiping God then."
