A good, basic definition of patience reads:
The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble or suffering without getting angry or upset.
I like this definition.
But how do you actually get better at practicing it?
For that you need to bring God into the picture...
... and trust that because He rules over all, you can wait on Him and obey Him in any circumstance -- confident He will bring about His perfect result.
Adam failed at this when he quit trusting God and started grasping.
Yet Jesus succeeded by continually committing Himself to the Father, fulfilling the mission He had for Him.
And it's through our own patient obedience... by faith in Jesus... we fulfill the purpose the Father has for us.
"Trust and obey, for there's no other way..."
