Our culture tends to view developing one's spirituality as a good thing.
But we never define what it means to be a spiritual person.
So typically we have vague notions as to what spirituality is all about.
What's common is to assume that in some way the unseen world is better than the world in which we live...
... so a spiritual person is often viewed as someone who is absorbed in some realm beyond the here and now.
Yet the Bible gives us a more accurate picture.
In the beginning, God created Adam as a spiritual man in a physical body and a physical world.
As a spiritual man, Adam was called to rule and cultivate the earth in dependence on God and His Word.
When Adam sinned, his spirituality was corrupted.
And it was corrupted by seeking to live by depending on his own understanding, outside of God's design.
When Jesus took on human flesh, he came as the ultimate spiritual man.
He too lived in a physical body in the physical world.
And He came with a mission, which was to restore us in both our relationship with God and the purpose He has for us.
Jesus fulfilled His mission perfectly, by totally depending on the Father, even to the point of death.
Having accomplished this task, Jesus not only demonstrated what it means to live as a spiritual person, He made it so we can live in such a way too.
And from this we can say the truly spiritual person is one who engages the world to fulfill his God-given mission in dependence on the Father.
In other words... to be a spiritual person is not to seek to escape the world, but to take part in it while trusting the Lord to fulfill His purpose through you.
