My friend Brian and I were talking about reading books.
Since I like reading books, I was enjoying the conversation.
And I think reading books is an important way to grow your understanding so you can best fulfill your place in life... so our chat had my attention.
Anyway, Brian pointed out you can only read so many books.
Say you read a book a month and you're 50 years old... that means on average you'll only read another 312 books in your lifetime.
That's not a lot of books -- if you're a reader.
And if you only read 4 books a year, you only have a little over a hundred books left for you to read.
This all varies, of course, depending on how fast you read, how long the books are, and so on.
But the point is: choose wisely.
With so many books available today, it's easy to read carelessly... and take in a lot of worthless material.
So put some thought into what you decide to read.
Ask yourself... "Is this book worthwhile or just a waste of time?"
C.S. Lewis made it a practice to read an older classic book for ever new book he read.
You might come up with another way to discipline your reading.
The idea is to be intentional about what you select.
Which is really just another way to redeem the time and rule over your days (Eph.5:16).
