I've known a lot of people who beat themselves up.
Heck, I've done it myself.
But some people just wallow in depression, guilt, and regret... stewing with self-loathing over wrong they've done.... sometimes for years.
And they believe this is the right thing to do... thinking deep down they don't deserve any better.
But beating yourself up is never a good course to follow.
For one, punishing yourself will never bring forgiveness... or a clean conscience.
To receive forgiveness, you need a perfect sacrifice... and we can only find that in Jesus Christ (Rom.5:1).
So it's only by faith in Him we can be found righteous and have peace.
And to ignore this is to dismiss the greatest act of love God has shown sinners.
But there's another reason not to punish yourself.
God sent His redeeming love in the form of His Son not just to forgive you, but restore you.
So you would go on and live out the purpose He has for your life... benefiting others around you.
Well you can't do this if you're preoccupied with shame... because it'll consume your time and energy and thoughts.
So if you're inclined to punish yourself, look to Jesus.
Receive His grace and mercy.
And if there's repenting that needs to be done and forgiveness that needs to be sought, do it.
But then get on with doing good with the gifts God's given you!
"There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom.8:1)
And when God says no, He means NO condemnation.
