Have you ever noticed one of the pleasures of Christmastime is we get a slight break from politics and all its divisions?
It's kind of ironic actually...
Because, as author Gary DeMar has noted, 'the birth of Jesus was the greatest political event in history.'
In our day we tend to keep distance between Jesus and anything political... as if politics were some sacred realm Jesus shall not intrude.
But that's not how the Bible sees it.
Centuries before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah foretold the government would rest on His shoulders (Isaiah 9:6).
And soon after His birth, Herod considered Jesus such a threat to his kingdom he gave orders to kill all the baby boys in Bethlehem who were two years old and younger (Mt. 2:16).
Remember too... Jesus was crucified because He identified Himself as a King and the crowd refused to recognize Him as such (Jn.18:37;19:15)... yet Pilate had a sign over His cross which called him 'King of the Jews' (Jn.19:19).
And do you recall the main theme of Jesus' and the apostles' preaching?
It was about the kingdom of God.
So...
Though we make a habit of separating Jesus from all things political, His birth changed politics forever... in that He and His Word set the standard by which every other ruler must abide.
The kings of the earth continue to take their stand against Him... but the Lord just laughs, for He has installed His own King to whom belongs all the nations (Ps.2:2,6).
And He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords (1 Tim.6:15).
Keep this all in mind as the political rancor resumes shortly.
“The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever” (Rev.11:15).
