Over the weekend I read at the end of the Roman Empire people were numb and searched for ways they could experience any kind of feeling.
This kind of helps explain the popularity of drunken orgies and blood sports... like gladiatorial combat games... during that time.
It was a way the people -- numbed by the excesses of their age -- tried to feel something.
Hmm...
As modern America has been compared to the Roman Empire...
Could it be the presence of problems like pornography, opiate addiction and the excessive devotion to entertainment in our own age is really just our way of escaping our numbness and trying to feel alive?
Seems plausible to me.
The good news is...
Just as the gospel transformed the Roman Empire, so can it transform our own American Empire.
Because just as Jesus turned the hearts of people back then... away from empty idols to faith, hope and love... so can He do it today.
And it's as we ourselves turn to Him that He delivers us from our own numbness and makes us feel most alive.
