If you follow football at all you know the Chicago Bears have had a disappointing season so far.
The big problem is: they aren't generating much offense.
And without much offense, it's tough to score points and win games.
Plus... you wear out your defense... which allows your opponent to dominate on offense, score and win.
Dealing with temptation works much the same way.
If you spend most of your energy defending yourself and trying to avoid certain sins, you're eventually going to wear down and fall.
This is where people with addictions struggle heavily...
They find themselves constantly on defense saying, "I'm not going to do this again... I'm not going to do this again... I'm not going to do this again" -- and then they tire and fail.
But when you go on offense, it totally changes the playing field...
... and instead of focusing on not being scored on, your focus is on moving the ball forward.
Or, as it relates directly to dealing with temptations... you become so absorbed in accomplishing the work God has for you that temptations lose their power... and they become mere distractions.
So if you've been struggling with temptations, seek God for the grace you need to go on offense for a change.
And take your focus off of avoiding the sins that trip you up and put it on doing the great things God is calling you to do.
As you do, your temptations may still be there, but they'll lose their appeal.
And you'll find yourself having a lot more fun and feeling a lot more fulfilled as you score points for God's kingdom while you play the position He's given you.
