After a major military victory in Ancient Rome there was a common practice among victorious generals...
They would parade some of the captives through the streets... believing that by this display of triumph they were somehow representing the Roman god, Jupiter.
Well... the New Testament picks up on this imagery when it tells us Jesus "Led captive a host of captives and gave gifts to men" (Eph.4:8).
The idea here is that Jesus...
1) Delivered us from our captivity to sin and death and made us captive to Himself.
2) Then gave us as gifts to the church and the world to be a source of blessing.
So...
If your faith is in Christ, you yourself are a gift... plucked by Him from misery and despair...
... and you now have a responsibility to be a blessing where God has you... as His transforming grace works in your life.
So... your fullest purpose is realized in giving yourself away.
