When Nehemiah's men were building the wall of Jerusalem they labored with one hand and held a weapon with the other (Neh.4:17).
This may seem like an inefficient way to get a job done, but it's actually a faithful application of God's original command to 'cultivate and keep' the garden of Eden (Gen.2:15).
It's also a good reminder for us to keep a balance between doing the work God has given us and protecting what He's entrusted to our care.
The key word, I think, is 'balance'...
Particularly in a decadent culture like ours...
... where it's so easy to get consumed with worrying about evil and protecting yourself that you get distracted from doing the good works God has in mind for you.
Being cautious and on guard is definitely in order. Especially these days.
But don't let fear divert you from the work of building God's kingdom.
That's just what the enemy would want.
