There's a lot of talk about living with authenticity these days.
But have you noticed how this has become a cover for all kinds of unchecked behavior?
So today... it's not uncommon for someone to let lose a torrent of abusive speech or give themselves over to some lustful passion and justify it by saying, "I'm just being true to myself."
Being authentic or true to oneself -- when rightly understood -- is a good thing. It's desirable, of course.
But living according to your true self doesn't mean surrendering to your fallen nature.
This would be to deny the gospel... the good news that Christ has come to redeem us and dwell in us so we would carry out God's true design for our lives.
So living with authenticity is not yielding to every impulse. It's following Christ in everything we face as He remakes us in His likeness.
This is why He says it's as you lose your life for His sake that you find it (Mt.16:25).
