Today marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day... which commemorates the Allied invasion of the beaches at Normandy on June 6, 1944.
D-Day is significant because it set the stage for the eventual defeat of the Axis powers in Europe during World War II.
There was still ongoing fighting that took place until VE Day, 11 months later, when the Nazis unconditionally surrendered. But the invasion at Normandy made total victory in Europe certain.
In his book 'Kingdoms in Conflict' the late Charles Colson points out how the Allied experience between D-Day and VE Day is a good analogy of the coming of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom.
Through His ministry, death and resurrection, Jesus initiated His kingdom on earth. It was D-Day for all humanity.
But since then, there's been plenty of work to do to make the world fit for His rule.
Yet, because Christ turned the tide of human history with His coming, His complete dominion over all things on earth is sure to come.
And it's with that assurance we can each labor faithfully in our own callings with hope.
