There's a lot of talk about privilege these days.
And, I'm sure you've noticed...
There's a significant faction in our society making some serious claims about those perceived as having certain privileges that others in society don't possess.
The claims pretty much go like this...
If you have certain privileges involving your color, economic status, education or even achievements, then you have an unfair advantage...
... and you should feel guilt and shame about your position in life... and out of pity you ought to make some kind of payback to those who don't share your privileges.
What are we to make of this?
Well...
For starters...
God -- in His providence -- gives us all a different place in life.
As the Bible says... there's nothing we have we haven't received (1 Cor.4:7)... for better or for worse.
So, by God's design there's a certain unevenness about the world and the people in it.
And anyone upset by this needs to take it up with God... and not claim those they perceive as having a privileged position owe them anything.
For He is the potter and we are the clay.
But...
That doesn't mean those with privileges don't have any obligations.
They do.
Because the Bible also tells us "to whom much is given, much is required" (Luke 12:48).
And that means no matter what privileges we have -- and we all have some -- we're to apply ourselves in using them for the good of others.
And we'll give an account to extent we've used our privileges to advance His kingdom (Mt.25:14ff).
So... in sum...
There's no shame or guilt to be felt over the privileges God in His grace has given you.
Just remember where they came from and what they're to be used for.
