Doing wrong sure is odd, isn't it?
In his Confessions St. Augustine relates how he and some boyhood friends broke into a neighbor's garden to steal unripe pears from a pear tree -- even though they had access to plenty of ripe pears outside of the garden.
Why did they do such a thing?
For the thrill of it!
Strange kind of fun.
But something we can all relate to...
... because ever since the fall of Adam the human heart has an irrational bent toward perversity...
... and it gets a thrill out of doing what's forbidden!
This is a big reason why people do all kinds of crazy, illogical, risky things... like embezzling money... getting involved in affairs... and a host of other forms of sneaking around.
These things are done because they give a rush... and promise a temporary escape from boredom.
Yet when Christ comes into our lives, He reshapes our hearts.
And he works in us so we would avoid folly and seek new thrills.
Namely, the thrill of doing the good works He's prepared for us...
... and using our gifts to partake in bringing His kingdom to the world.
Now what could be more thrilling than that?
