Prior to his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed:
"My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will" (Mt.26:39).
Notice a couple things about Jesus's prayer...
First, He freely expressed His desire to His Father.
He didn't hold back from asking for an alternative to the part of His calling He wanted to avoid the most.
But second, He was totally submissive to His Father's will.
And He yielded Himself to the greater purpose He had for His life.
... Both aspects of this prayer should be a part of our own approach to the Father.
We should express our desires fully and boldly... as we seek God and let Him know how we'd like to see any given situation play out.
But we should always do so humbly... accepting His own master plan for the way He intends to use us.
And it's through this ongoing relationship -- filled with asking and yielding -- you live out the calling He has for you.
