In the new movie 'The Highwaymen' a couple of former Texas Rangers chase down the notorious Bonnie and Clyde to put an end to their robbing and killing spree.
During the pursuit, the Rangers talk about how shocking it was that Bonnie Parker had become so hardened and ruthless after being so popular and talented in her school years.
The conversation ends with one of the men saying, "That girl's in a lot of pain."
Quite an insightful remark.
Because it's pain -- mixed with our sinful nature -- that so often drives people to activities that destroy others and themselves.
So, everything from a critical tongue... to addictions... to bringing harm on others -- they're all signs of pain.
Deep personal pain.
But the good news is... Jesus came to take that pain away...
When the Bible reveals how Christ bore our griefs and sorrows (Is. 53:4), it's telling us all the sin, guilt, shame, regret and condemnation that screws up our lives in so many ways has been laid on Him.
Meaning... all the junk that shuts down hearts and leads us to destruction has been removed, making way for a new life in Him.
In our fallen world, everyone has pain.
But by believing what Christ has done, that pain -- with its consequences -- doesn't have to rule us.
And the grace found in Him sets us free to take our lives -- with all we've done... or has been done to us -- and use them for good.
