A few days ago Congressman Walter Jones from North Carolina died.
Jones had a long career, and his most significant action in Congress was that he changed his view on the war in Iraq.
During the early days of the war, Jones was all in favor of U.S. involvement.
But after he discovered the case for getting involved was based on selective intelligence and that the country went to war without justification, he changed his mind.
In fact, Jones is known for making a sobering speech on the floor of Congress where he took personal responsibility for the deaths of those in the war.
This took a lot of courage and integrity.
And it cost Jones a lot of political points.
But for him, it was the right thing to do.
In keeping with his change of heart, Jones spent his Saturdays doing what he could to support those veterans and families affected by the war.
And, his mission during the rest of his career was to make sure the country would never again go to war on the basis of misinformation.
So why am I sharing this with you?
Because it illustrates that sometimes finding your mission involves changing your mind.
Or, to put it biblically, sometimes it follows repentance.
