The great martial artist Bruce Lee once said:
"You will continue to suffer if you have an emotional reaction to everything that is said to you."
Wise words.
And they're completely consistent with what the Book of Proverbs tells us about words.
Proverbs tells us words have great power...
... they penetrate our innermost being, can hurt like a thrusting sword... and even have the power of life and death.
When Proverbs speaks of words, it's usually to warn us about using them as an offensive weapon on others.
But we also need to be careful how we respond to hurtful words when they come our way.
And we need to make it a habit not to react to them emotionally... and instead look to God for grace so we stay on the course He has for us.
Reacting to the things people say can quickly take you in direction you don't want to go.
But trusting God to use the words of others -- no matter how hurtful they can be -- can refine you and make you more equipped for the work He has for you.
