There's an old saying that
says we're supposed to 'let go and let God.'
I don't hear it said as much as I used to, but the idea behind it still has plenty of influence.
But is it biblical?
If you take the phrase to just mean we're to live in dependence on God, of course this is true... apart from Him we can do nothing.
But usually the phrase is taken to mean something more than that.
Such as...
... we're to just let go and let God make us holy...
... or, we're to let go and
let God, allowing His will to be done.
Yet, while it's true we're to submit ourselves to the Lord, we are NOT to be passive...
... and that's the real problem with the 'let go and let God' approach to life.
God calls us to be active participants in both our personal growth and the development of His creation.
Notice in the first chapter of the Bible how after God
created the heavens and the earth, He took hold of what He made and began to give it the shape He wanted.
In a similar way -- as His image bearers -- we're to take hold of what God has entrusted to us and develop it for His glory.
This is not a passive activity.
It involves our total engagement as He provides the wisdom and
strength we need.
