Have you noticed what's missing from our nation's conversation about suicide?

You probably heard there were another couple of high profile suicides recently.

Sad news.

Whenever this happens our country's ongoing conversation about suicide resumes... as it should.

Yet I've noticed there always seems to be something missing from the conversation.

And that's anything about the role of faith.

There are plenty of remarks about 'mental health' and the clues that someone may be suicidal... but little discussion about how one's faith shapes their mental health and ability to cope.

This is unfortunate.

From my 20 plus years as a pastor, I learned people can be suicidal for a variety of reasons...

- They may be overwhelmed by guilt and shame over something they've done...

- They may be in some hard or dark place they see no way of getting out of...

- Or, they are shocked and disappointed by the way some life event or situation prevents the story of their life from going in the direction they think it should.

There are other reasons people contemplate suicide, sure... but these are the basics.

And they can all be remedied by faith.

Jesus came for the very purpose of taking away guilt and shame...

The Holy Spirit is able to shine in any darkness to reveal the path of a meaningful existence...

And God the Father is always writing the best possible story for our lives... even if parts of them don't go as we would write them.

But to see this we need faith.

I know, in secular America faith is not often a welcome topic of discussion.

But the truth is... bringing faith into the conversation is the best thing we can do to renew our own hope and bring it to those who need it most.
