Yesterday we looked at a common misunderstanding: the assumption that “spiritual” means non-physical.
But if spiritual doesn’t mean immaterial, then we have to ask a deeper question:
Where does true
spirituality happen?
The biblical answer may surprise you.
Spirituality doesn’t happen by escaping the physical world. It happens as the Holy Spirit brings transformation within it.
Because “spiritual” means of the Spirit, every area of life becomes an arena for the Spirit’s transforming work.
Your parenting can be
spiritual.
Your work can be spiritual.
Your leadership can be spiritual.
Your hard conversations can be spiritual.
Your suffering can be spiritual.
Your prayers in the middle of chaos can be spiritual.
Your simple acts of love expressed
through ordinary, embodied acts of sacrifice can be spiritual.
Too often we separate the sacred from the ordinary.
We think of spiritual activities as what happens in church, during prayer, or while reading Scripture.
But the Spirit of God is not confined to certain moments or places.
He transforms us so we can live for
Christ and advance His kingdom in every moment and every responsibility He's given us.
Real spirituality is not withdrawing from creation. It's living within creation under the Spirit’s influence.
It is walking in step with the Spirit in our homes, our work, our relationships, and every domain of life.
As Paul reminds us:
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25
The goal is not to escape ordinary life.
The goal is to live our days in the extraordinary power of the Spirit.
