What Is God Calling You to Do?
A lot of men struggle to find their calling.
That makes sense, because this matters.
Men want what they
do to count.
And Scripture tells us that God has made us for a purpose.
So how do you begin discerning your calling?
One helpful place to start is with your desires and abilities.
This is actually a biblical pattern.
The Bible speaks of elders desiring the office, while also receiving outward confirmation of their gifts from others.
In other words, there is often both an inward pull and an outward recognition.
Another helpful way to think about calling is to look for the intersection of your skills, interests, and opportunities.
So take note of where these areas may be coming together in your life.
Sometimes a calling is as simple as seeing a need you know you can meet.
The late Gary North also offered an insightful definition of calling:
“Your calling is the most important thing that you can do in which you would be most difficult to replace.”
That’s worth thinking about.
Of course, prayer and obedience matter too.
And this is not just about finding a vocation.
It is about discerning what God would have you do in this season of life, regardless of your age or situation.
The important thing to realize is this:
You have something God created you to do.
There are works He prepared beforehand for you to walk in.
And in your time and place, you are the
best person to do them.
So don’t drift through life assuming your role does not matter.
Seek Him.
Pay attention.
Develop your gifts.
Look for needs.
And be faithful with the opportunities that come your way.
Your calling is not about becoming famous or gaining recognition.
It is about being faithful with who God made you to be, here and now.
