The Identity Crisis No One Is Talking About
There’s a troubling trend of male college athletes taking their own lives. I just heard of another tragic
case.
Many are asking why this is happening.
I believe the answer is straightforward: this is an identity issue.
Too many young men ground their identity in athletic performance.
When they win, they feel valuable. When they lose, they feel like they’ve lost themselves.
That kind of foundation can't sustain the pressure, the highs, and the lows that come with competition.
But this isn’t just an athlete problem.
Men are prone to anchor their identity in all kinds of shifting areas—jobs, families, finances, fitness.
These are good things. But what happens when a reversal occurs?
When a man loses his job, faces a divorce, goes broke, or receives a devastating diagnosis?
For many, their identity is shaken. Sometimes even shattered.
And with it goes their sense of who they are, along with their hope and purpose.
That’s why every man must ground his identity in something permanent and true.
God gives that to us freely... as His image bearers, redeemed through faith in Jesus Christ.
In Him, a man’s identity is secure—no matter what he experiences.
Everything else is shifting sand.
Make sure you’re building on the right foundation.
Your life depends on it.
“In Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
