How did our culture get so far off track?
Why is there so much chaos in our culture?
This could be the biggest reason… and we rarely consider it:
Too few Christians possess and live out a biblical worldview.
I just read recent research revealing that only 4% of American adults hold a biblical worldview.
Four percent!
That means even though we may talk about God, Jesus, creation, faith, and values, only a relative few have a biblical view of these topics.
And even among this group, only about half live consistently with their professed convictions…. in areas such as marriage,
family, and the sanctity of life.
Without a doubt, this has an impact on our culture.
And it’s not pretty.
Jesus identifies the church as God’s agent for influencing the world for good.
He refers to His people as the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Mt. 5:13-16).
But if the salt loses its savor, it becomes good for nothing.
That’s the warning Jesus gives.
So what do we do?
The situation makes a couple things clear…
First, Christians must quit blaming outside forces–like
government, schools, or media–for our woes.
These play a part, but they are symptoms of a deeper issue.
Specifically, of how undeveloped we’ve become.
So we must look within, at ourselves.
And answer the call to think and live as Christians, no matter what the condition of our surrounding culture.
Second, discipleship must become our priority as believers. And it must get focused attention in the church.
For too long we have settled for a watered down gospel…
… one that is quick to speak of grace, but rarely brings up the responsibilities that go with living in covenant with God.
That has to change.
Jesus didn’t come so we could merely ask Him into our hearts and live with hope for heaven.
He came so we would be remade… to think and live as He did…
To be those who obey all that He commanded–and then teach our nation to do the same.
The forces in our culture make this daunting.
And our own weakness makes it harder still.
But one thing grace does is strengthen the heart.
It changes us and renews us.
So by the work of His Spirit we can “appear as lights in the world.”
Even in the midst of a perverse
generation.
Our world needs help.
And the answer is in you, through the renewal God intends to bring through your life.
So follow the Lord.
Live as His disciple.
The
cultural renewal we need begins here.
