What to do when you you're in a hole
A crucial skill every Christian man needs is knowing how to preach
the gospel to himself.
This is true even if he never intends to preach to others.
Because when a man finds himself in a hole—as he will—the first thing he must do is
not go dark or panic, but return to the gospel.
Every man ends up in a hole at some point.
Sometimes by his own choices. Sometimes simply by living in a fallen
world.
Either way, he cannot stay there.
He must not wallow in self-pity, drift into passivity, or believe he’s stuck.
He must act.
But here’s the irony:
He cannot pull
himself out on his own. He must be lifted out. And that only happens through the gospel.
So what does it look like?
First, face
reality.
You are in a hole. However you got there, it’s not where you’re meant to live.
Second, recall the good news: Jesus
Christ was crucified for sinners and raised from the dead.
This is your hope. This is the power that lifts you up.
Third,
believe it.
Trust that by His Spirit, God can bring you out, grant forgiveness where needed, and set your feet back on the path He has for you.
This is not
abstract theology.
It’s the way forward.
So whenever you’re in a hole, preach the gospel to yourself.
It’s what lifts you up… and sets you back to the work God made you for.
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? … Hope in God” (Psalm 42:5).
