Approach life like a ship captain
I've been thinking...
It might do men well to function more like old-time ship captains.
Really.
Matt Walsh observed...
"Ship captains during the age of discovery were some of the most impressive human beings to ever live...
We have trouble
appreciating just how unimaginably great these men were...
They had to play the role of navigator, cartographer, astronomer, logistics manager, military commander, judge, police captain, diplomat, CEO, recruiter, accountant and governor, all at the same time...
All under extreme duress, out in the middle of the ocean, cut off from the rest of the world where the penalty for one wrong decision was the death of everyone on board.
And we should add: it was all done without an Internet
connection!
Walsh continues:
"These are some of the most brilliant and gifted human beings the world has ever known...
Nobody on earth today can come close to matching them...
They had a level of both skill and physical courage that just doesn't exist on the planet today."
When I read this, I was inspired.
And it occurred to me...
Men today would grow by taking some lessons from Columbus, Magellan, or Sir Walter Raleigh.
Learning about these explorers in school, they seemed like little more than adventurers.
But they were so much more.
And can teach us much about:
- Pursuing a destination
- Navigating the unknown
- Leading others under pressure
- Making decisions with big consequences
- Forging new pathways
What man doesn’t need to grow in these areas?
Looking back at these remarkable explorers reminds us what’s possible.
So consider your own life:
Where do you need greater vision?
Where do you need courage to act?
Where do you need to grow in competence?
Approach it like a captain... take responsibility, expand your capacity, and
move forward in faith.
Ask God to enlarge your vision and strengthen your hand for the work ahead.
Then venture out.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
