The Bible: Our best reference point
Years ago, our family purchased a copy of Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary.
One of the things I love about it is how often it uses the Bible to define words.
In fact, there are over 6,000 Scripture citations throughout its pages.
Webster understood that words shape the way we think—and that the Bible is the ultimate source of truth.
He didn’t just define "faith,” “grace,” or “justice” in abstract terms. He showed how Scripture gives those words
meaning.
For example, under the word faith he quoted Romans 10:17:
“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
And under justice, Proverbs 1:1–3 reminds us that wisdom and justice begin with God Himself:
“To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; to
receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity.”
We live in a time when it’s critical to think biblically about our lives and the issues we face.
Like Webster, we need to keep going back to the Bible as our main reference point.
It’s not enough to assume we know what words like truth, love, or justice mean.
Without God’s Word, even good ideas get off track.
The more familiar we become with Scripture, the more clearly we see—and the more faithfully we can live.
Let the Bible be your first—and ultimate—reference point.
