Breaking out of the holding pattern
When I was a kid I enjoyed watching the planes fly over our house on their way to land at O’Hare International Airport.
Sometimes, due to heavy air traffic or weather conditions, the planes were in a holding pattern—and you’d see the same plane loop around several times.
I got thinking recently…
holding patterns don’t just apply to aviation.
It’s how some men approach their lives.
They look forward to landing in heaven someday…
But in the meantime, they see themselves in a holding pattern—
Just waiting, as time goes by day after day, month after month, year after year.
But the truth is, God doesn’t intend us to treat this life as a waiting room.
We’re to approach it more like an athlete contending in an arena, a farmer cultivating his field, or a soldier engaging the
battle.
Because in Christ, eternal life has already begun.
When He rose from the dead, we rose with Him (Romans 6:4–5).
And we’ve been raised to walk in newness of life—not someday, but now.
That means every moment matters.
Every domain we touch—our homes, our work, our communities—is ground where His kingdom can take root.
So instead of circling, we’re called to land the plane…
To seek first His kingdom and His righteousness…
To bring His will to earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10, 33).
So break out of any holding pattern you find yourself today…
And live the resurrection life that’s already yours in Christ—here and now.
