The tension of living in God’s story
Men tend to swing one of two ways.
Some charge ahead with a five-year plan, determined to make it happen.
Others live day to day, waiting for God to show up with a sign.
But wisdom lives in the tension between the two.
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Pr. 16:9).
That’s not a contradiction. It’s coordination.
God expects us to plan—to take responsibility for the part we know.
But He also
expects us to walk humbly, knowing He’s writing the story.
James 4:13–15 reminds us not to boast about tomorrow, but to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
That’s not passivity—it's trust.
The story you are a part of is bigger than you.
And God calls you to participate—to think, build, and prepare
in fulfilling your part…
But always with flexibility and a readiness to follow.
So make your plans.
Do your best work.
But keep listening and watching.
Because the
story God is writing through your life may not go how you expect—and that’s where the adventure begins.
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (Pr. 16:3).
