Why Change Feels Impossible
Most men don’t fail because they’re unwilling.
They fail because they’re trying to change without first knowing who they are.
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, puts it this way:
“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”
He’s right—habits and choices do reinforce identity over time. And every vote counts.
But there’s a deeper truth Clear’s insight can’t reach on its own:
Before a man can cast his votes wisely, he must first know who he already is.
Character doesn’t begin with better habits.
It begins with a clearer self-understanding.
And this understanding is not
self-made.
Identity is received by grace…
… as an image-bearer of God, fallen, yes, but redeemed and recreated to do the good works He has prepared.
Your choices matter—they shape you.
But they are not the source of who you are.
They are the faithful response to the identity God has already given you.
When a man lives from this foundation, discipline, obedience, and growth follow.
So if you’ve been frustrated by repeated failures, here’s the starting point:
Stop trying to become someone you’re not.
Recognize the man God has already made you to be.
Then, let your choices reinforce that truth, vote by vote, day by day.
Because lasting change
doesn’t begin with your initiative—it starts with your identity.
