How Men Grow
‘The Trivium’ is usually talked about in education circles.
But it’s also a powerful framework for forming men.
It gives you a simple pattern for growth you can apply to any area of life.
Here’s the pattern:
I. Learn God’s design (Grammar).
Before a man can grow, he needs truth to stand on.
That means learning the basics—what God says about who you are, what He’s called you to, and the responsibilities He’s placed in your hands.
You can’t build strength on guesswork.
II. Understand how it works (Logic).
Once you know the foundations, you start seeing how things connect.
You begin to understand cause and effect—why certain habits produce certain outcomes, why some approaches work and others don’t.
Logic brings clarity, steadiness, and direction.
III. Live it out with skill (Rhetoric).
This is where growth becomes visible.
It’s the practiced ability to apply truth with wisdom—to lead, speak, act, and respond in a way that reflects maturity.
Rhetoric is where a man becomes useful to others.
You can see this pattern everywhere.
When a man wants to grow spiritually, he learns God’s Word, understands how it shapes his life, and then practices obedience.
When he wants to grow in his work, he learns the fundamentals, grasps the systems, and then delivers skilled action.
The order never changes: foundation → understanding → practice.
(Obviously, faith and obedience play a critical role too.)
Follow this pattern consistently and you’ll become better grounded, wiser, and more effective—able to rule yourself, serve others, and fulfill the purpose God has given
you.
It’s an ancient approach that still forms men today.
