Becoming bold as a lion
The boldest man I've ever known is a retired pastor named Gus.
He's what you'd call fearless.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he carries himself with a physical courage.
But you feel his boldness most in the directness of his speech.
He does not mince words.
As I've observed Gus, I've wondered how he
became so bold.
I know he prays a lot—and that's part of it.
But I've also discovered he understands Proverbs 28:1.
"The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion."
This verse shows there's a connection between righteousness and boldness—and it's twofold.
First, there’s forensic righteousness—the righteousness God declares over you when you trust in Christ.
You’re justified, fully accepted, and no longer condemned
(Rom. 5:1).
That truth settles the heart.
The man who knows he’s right with God has no need to run or hide.
Second, there’s practical righteousness—the daily practice of walking in the light and aligning your life with God’s truth (1 Jn 1:7).
This keeps your conscience clear, and a
clear conscience produces courage.
The man with nothing to hide can face anything.
Most men wish they were bolder.
If that’s you, start here.
Boldness isn’t a personality trait—it’s the fruit of righteousness.
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness…” — Matthew 6:33
