Why some men step back from leading
Many men today are hesitant to lead.
Not because they’re apathetic—but because they’ve absorbed a distorted view of patriarchy.
The word carries baggage: abuse, control, emotional distance.
Culture has done quite a job exposing the dangers of bad patriarchy...
But it’s failed to distinguish it from the good.
So men back away.
They don’t want to be overbearing. They don’t want to be that guy.
But when you only see leadership as dangerous,
you’ll never embrace it as a gift—which brings a leadership void.
Here’s the difference:
False patriarchy demands control and
isolates.
Biblical headship takes responsibility and draws near.
One wounds. The other restores and builds up.
One protects itself. The other sacrifices for others.
The problem isn’t patriarchy—it’s when authority is used selfishly.
The answer isn’t to reject leadership. It’s to redeem it.
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…”
—Ephesians
5:25
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
—Ephesians 6:4
Don’t let the world’s caricatures of masculine leadership shut you down.
Your family—and the world around you—needs you to take godly initiative.
