Two qualities every young man needs
One of my sons recently asked what books I think every young man should read.
I gave it some thought, and several titles came to mind.
One of them is a little-known book called The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination.
It’s long and theologically rich — but not difficult to read.
I recommend it because it’s the clearest and most compelling book I know on the sovereignty of God.
And I believe embracing God’s sovereignty develops two qualities every young man desperately needs:
1. Humility
It’s easy for young men to assume they have life figured out.
Eventually, the hard knocks of experience will humble them.
But there’s a better way:
True humility begins when a man realizes God is sovereign.
When you understand the
Lord is in control of everything — including your salvation — it brings a deep, lasting humility.
The sooner a young man understands this, the better.
“God is
opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).
2. Courage
Young men face challenges on every front —
identity, calling, relationships, responsibility.
It’s overwhelming.
And courage is essential.
Here’s the good news:
Believing that God rules over your past, present, and future gives you real courage.
You can be assured He’s in the details of your life…
And you are not navigating whatever you’re confronting alone.
God is in
charge — and knowing it puts iron in your veins.
So:
If you’re a young man, grow in your understanding of God’s sovereignty.
And if you have young men in your life, pray they would trust the Lord who rules over all.
It will shape them with humility and courage that lasts a lifetime.
“The LORD has established His throne in the heavens; And His sovereignty rules over all” (Psalm 103:19).
