This email marks the halfway point of your Five Day Mini-Course on Discovering Your God-Given Identity.
Day Three: The Foundation of Your Identity
There’s a temptation to avoid as you seek to grow in your identity…
It’s the assumption that your identity is something you must
achieve.
Or put another way…
It’s thinking it’s up to you to become somebody and make a name – or identity – for yourself.
Nothing could be further than the truth!
Our identity is not something we achieve; it’s something we
receive.
It is a gift of God.
There are two biblical truths that establish this fact.
#1 You’ve been created in God’s image
The first chapter of the Bible tells us we’ve all been made in God’s image (Gen. 1:26).
This is the basis for every person's identity.
Including yours!
You are an image-bearer of God -- and the essence of your identity as a person lies here.
How glorious!
Yet there is a problem.
Ever
since the fall of Adam, human beings have sought to create their own identity…
To be “like God” and establish their identity on their own terms.
This has only brought confusion... and has led us away from our true identity.
Not only that...
This independence from our Creator fuels the
assumption that we must establish our identity through things like our achievements or associations.
This is a great loss for us as human beings... as it disconnects us from who we really are.
But there is good news... which leads to the second essential truth about the foundation of your identity.
#2 There is redemption
in Jesus Christ
After the fall of Adam, God did not give up on humanity.
He put into action a plan to restore it.
This plan includes the restoration of our identity, which was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for our attempts to live
as something other than what God made us to be.
And when Jesus was raised from the dead, He put us in a position to live with renewed identities, by making us new creatures in Him.
This redemption changes everything.
And at the heart of it is the renewal of your identity.
Specifically, it means...
No more chasing... no more comparing... and no more uncertainty when it comes to your identity…
Because in Christ, your identity is solid and sure!
The Need for Faith
To experience this transformation,
all you need is to BELIEVE.
To trust that what God says about you is true…
As His image-bearer…
And as His adopted son through faith in Jesus Christ.
The result of this is a secure identity.
A confidence in who you are.
And the ability to live out the purpose God intends for you.
It all starts by believing what God says about you.
And as you continue in faith, day by day, your sense of identity will grow stronger and stronger.
We’ll
look further into growing strong in your identity next time.
