This email continues your Five Day Mini-Course on Discovering Your God-Given Identity.
Day Two: Obstacles to Your True Identity
Becoming grounded in your identity isn’t complicated.
I believe you’ll see as we go through this course that locking in on who you are is really a
straightforward matter.
But first we need to clear some obstacles that may stand in the way.
So I’d like to lay out three common hurdles that may keep you from living in your true identity.
#1 Ignoring the issue of your identity
As the topic of identity gets
attention in our culture, it’s an opportunity to become better established in the truth of who you are.
Unfortunately, there are those who would rather ignore the topic, as they view it as unimportant, complex or controversial.
I believe this is a mistake.
Giving attention to understanding your true identity is crucial to every
facet of your life.
And to fulfill the purpose God has for you, you must have a firm grasp on who He made you to be.
So please don't ignore the issue of your identity.
#2 Getting your identity from your life story
Everyone has a life story… and many people
find their identity in the highs and lows of their stories.
One person may find his identity in his successes, achievements or appearance, while another may find it in his failures.
Many today have found their identity in being a victim… perhaps of an illness or being mistreated in some way.
No doubt, our stories are important and
influence who we are.
But your identity must be founded on something deeper than your life experiences…
Otherwise, you’ll be ill-equipped to adapt to the ups and downs your story brings...
And miss out on the advantage that comes from living in the identity God intends for you.
#3 Confusing your identity with your roles
We all wear many hats… which may include spouse, parent, citizen, church member, employer or employee, etc.
As we fulfill these roles, they – like our stories – shape our identities in important and legitimate ways.
But here too... your identity
must go beyond your roles.
Changes in roles happen all the time.
For example…
People lose jobs, spouses or friendships...
When events like these happen, it’s crucial to have your identity based on a foundation that goes beyond these
roles.
We’ll discuss this foundation in our next session.
But for now, consider a few questions…
1- Do you need to give greater attention to the basis of your identity?
2- Are you getting your identity from some aspect of your life-story?
3- Or finding it in your roles?
Think about the source of your own identity before the crucial session coming up tomorrow.
