Three types of discipline we all need
For the first time in almost 40 years I’m preparing to run a 5K
race.
The training regimen has got me realizing how I need discipline — as to workouts, food and sleep.
But there are other forms of discipline besides the physical kind...
And though we tend to emphasize physical discipline, we need to remember and apply these other kinds… as much, if not more!
God made us body, mind and spirit.
So beyond ruling over our bodies, we need mental and moral discipline too.
The Bible addresses mental discipline when it exhorts us to…
Renew our minds (Rom. 12:2)…
Take ever thought captive to Christ (2 Cor. 10:5)…
And focus on what’s true, honorable, pure, etc… (Phil. 4:8).
Regarding moral discipline…
The book of Proverbs has much to say as it urges us
to…
Keep God’s commandments (Pr. 7:1-2; 19:16)…
And stay far from immorality (Pr. 5, 6 and 7).
The New Testament highlights moral discipline also…
As it commands us to ‘put to death’ aspects of our earthly nature — like lust, evil desires and greed — which are forms of idolatry (Col.
3:5).
Practicing physical, mental and moral discipline is essential for you to fulfill God’s purpose for your life–
And have the impact He intends to bring through you for His kingdom.
So ask Him to identify where you need self-control…
And ask Him for the grace to exercise it… in whatever
area He shows you.
