Expect great things, attempt great things
We don’t tend to expect great things these days.
Nor are we inclined to attempt them.
The uninspiring phrase “I hope we make it” seems to be more the motto of our times.
This is far different than the outlook of the 19th century missionary William Carey.
He lived according to the theme:
“Expect great things, attempt great things.”
And with the faith and work ethic this theme reflects, he not only brought light to the darkness of
India…
… he ignited a global missions movement that lasted a century.
In our own day…
When hope and vision are waning…
We need to remember…
By faith, we have
the power to do great things.
Jesus addressed this when he said…
“According to your faith be it done to you” (Mt. 9:29)…
He also promised the ability to move mountains with even a small amount of faith (Mt. 17:20).
The book of Hebrews illustrates this power when it reminds us of those who:
“… through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong,
became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens (Heb. 11:33,34).
In our own culture of growing unbelief, there’s a serious need for faith and deeds to match it.
You can be a part of meeting this need.
The way to start is to make a habit of renewing your faith in God — through His Word and prayer.
Make
constantly turning to Him a part of your everyday life.
From there, He will provide the vision for what you ought to attempt.
With God’s help we will do mighty things (Ps. 108:13).
